A short comic
Image as story telling was the task to produce a short comic about an experience that happened during school years. It was to be based on a factual event and represent the story through imagery. "A trip up the everglades" is a story about a kayaking trip that ends with the main character being frightened of toads in the night.

A summary
Tools: 120gsm cartridge paper, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.2 fine line pen, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Procreate
Process: The colouring was added by taking photographs of the images and adding them into procreate to enhance the storytelling qualities, this allowed me to experiment and easily add or change the colour pallet. The images were then added to the computer and compiled in illustrator and photoshop to improve the presentation. I used a variety of shading techniques over the five images including, cross hatching, stippling and continuous line drawing.
Reflection: As my natural drawing style is sketchy and free flowing I wanted to add colour to bring together the common elements and represent the story more clearly. Some of the images are representative and some I find are lacking clarity and definition with details. This activity was a huge challenge for me as it really put me out of my comfort zone within my design speciality and interests. I am not someone who has spent much time reading or looking at comics and I feel like I completely misrepresented the style. Even with researching comics and illustrations for this activity I still feel as though I embraced my natural sketching style over actually trying to achieve a comic illustration. Maybe in the future I would push outside my comfort zone and experiment more with other illustration techniques.
